Syllabus and Guidelines for Kyu Grade Promotion

Scope

These guidelines are applicable only to students of Uechi-ryu at the Ryo Shin Kan Karate Club. Their purpose is to help students to recognise the progression of material from the beginning of training until the new beginning of black-belt training. They are not inviolable or fixed standards. Neither is any rank fixed and permanent below Sho Dan black-belt. If a student is unable to attend for some time their may lose their grade. This is not unconditional but depends on the amount of time absent, the quality and quantity of material remembered and the length of time in training prior to the absence.

The promotion of students depends upon three things; first their ability, second their personal progress and third their commitment to regular training. New students should attend as regularly as possible.

Not all of the requirements listed below will be tested at a formal promotion grading. Some will be continually assessed during ordinary training sessions in the preceding weeks. Accordingly the student is expected to continually improve the control, accuracy and speed of all previously acquired material. Uechi-ryu karate begins and ends with Sanchin kata. It is vital that this kata is continuously improved through hard study.
